When a child is struggling in math, the most natural response is often to provide more help.

Parents hire a tutor, purchase additional workbooks, enrol the child in a learning centre, or increase the amount of practice completed at home.

Sometimes this works.

But many families discover something frustrating: despite the additional time, money, and effort, the same problems continue.

The child may understand a concept during a tutoring session but forget it shortly afterward. They may complete a worksheet correctly with support and then become confused when working independently. Mistakes reappear, confidence declines, and the family begins wondering whether even more tutoring is required.

The problem may not be the amount of help.

It may be where the help begins.

Tutoring often starts with the current assignment

Most tutoring is understandably reactive.

A child arrives with homework, an upcoming test, or a topic currently being taught in school. The tutor explains that material and helps the child complete the immediate task.

That can be useful, but it may not address the reason the child is struggling.

A fractions problem may actually be revealing weak multiplication facts.

Difficulty with algebra may trace back to an incomplete understanding of negative numbers.

Repeated errors in multi-digit computation may come from gaps in place value rather than carelessness.

When the underlying foundation is missing, repeatedly explaining the current lesson can provide temporary relief without creating lasting progress.

A good tutor cannot compensate for an unknown starting point

Even an excellent tutor is limited if nobody has clearly identified where the child’s understanding begins to weaken.

Without that information, tutoring can become a cycle:

  1. The child struggles with a current topic.
  2. The tutor explains it.
  3. The child improves temporarily.
  4. A new topic exposes another gap.
  5. The cycle begins again.

The tutor may be working hard. The child may be trying. The parent may be paying significant fees.

But the support is being delivered without a complete map.

Children do not fit neatly into one grade level

One of the largest problems with conventional math support is the assumption that a child belongs at a single grade level.

Real learning is rarely that tidy.

A child may show advanced reasoning while still lacking fluency with basic facts. Another may understand geometry but struggle with fractions. A gifted or twice-exceptional learner may be several levels ahead in one skill and several levels behind in another.

This unevenness is common among children with ADHD, math anxiety, learning differences, interrupted learning, or gaps accumulated over several years.

Giving that child more work from one assigned grade level may reinforce strengths while continuing to miss the actual weakness.

The first question should be different

Before asking, “How much more tutoring does my child need?” it may be more useful to ask:

“Where does my child actually need to begin?”

A meaningful math assessment should do more than produce a score.

It should help reveal:
